DANISH PUPILS WILL HAVE TO ORALLY DEFEND ESSAYS IN ATTEMPT TO COMBAT AI CHEATING

The Danish government has announced a set of new measures aimed at reducing the use of AI‑generated text in school work. Starting this academic year, pupils aged 16 to 19 in upper secondary schools (gymnasiet) will be required to orally defend their essays, and will be encouraged to complete written assignments on school computers under monitored conditions rather than at home.

According to Education | The Guardian, the new policy includes monitoring of students’ computer screens during assignment time to ensure that work is produced independently. The oral defence, which will take place in a controlled classroom setting, is intended to verify the originality of students’ written output and to deter the use of AI tools for cheating.
