Indonesia intensified its wildfire response on Monday, deploying helicopters and hundreds of firefighters to the East Java region, where a massive blaze is destroying Mount Bromo National Park. The fire has already scorched about 743 hectares (1,836 acres) of land, including the popular Penanjakan viewpoint.
According to the Associated Press, the largest fire is burning within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where dry grasslands, vegetation and protected edelweiss flowers are being consumed. The Forestry Ministry said that the dry conditions and a strengthening El Nino are raising the risk of additional forest and peatland fires across the archipelago.
The outbreak comes amid an unusually dry season in Indonesia, heightening fire risk and prompting a coordinated national effort to protect both natural and human communities.
