In southern Italy, a €1 million (US$1.15 million) instant‑win lottery ticket was recovered from a trash bin by municipal binmen after the winner urgently called for help, according to a local waste‑management company.
Roberto Nicola Toscano, administrator of the SANB company in the Puglia region, said the binmen combed through mounds of rubbish on their truck and the ticket was "miraculously still in one piece." The winner had gone to check her ticket on Sunday, prompting the frantic request for assistance.
Finding a winning ticket in trash is rare; the incident highlights how quickly lottery prizes can be lost and the unexpected role that waste workers can play in preserving valuable items.
