On Saturday, Iran announced it is nearing an agreement with Oman to establish a new framework for managing traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran cautioned that the waterway would only reopen if additional conditions—chiefly compensation from the United States—were satisfied.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the emerging deal would regulate maritime traffic but would not, on its own, lift restrictions. Reuters reported that Iran’s statement made clear the Strait would not open automatically. According to the Jerusalem Post, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps emphasized that reopening would depend on U.S. talks, not solely on the Oman agreement. Meanwhile, the UAE said it had targeted a tanker following Iran’s claim of a deal with Oman.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes, making any change in access significant for global markets.
