NASA scientists announced that the Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission successfully predicted the arrival of a solar eruption at Earth within a 30‑minute margin of error. The proof‑of‑concept test used continuous imagery from PUNCH to track the eruption’s trajectory, delivering the forecast ahead of the event.
The demonstration was presented on Tuesday at the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Scientific Meeting. According to NASA, the preliminary results are currently under review by the journal Space Weather. The test marks a first for PUNCH, showing the instrument’s potential for real‑time space‑weather forecasting.
