According to Science News, the protein was administered to mice that had ingested the same type of shellfish toxin that affects people. The treated mice survived while untreated controls did not, indicating that the frog-derived protein neutralizes or mitigates the toxin’s effects. The researchers have not yet conducted trials in humans, but the findings suggest a potential antidote for shellfish poisoning cases.
Paralytic shellfish poisoning can result from consuming contaminated shellfish and currently has limited treatment options. A biologically derived antidote could significantly improve outcomes for those exposed to the toxin.
