HONG KONG TESTS THERMAL DRONES TO CATCH ILLEGAL SMOKING AT CONSTRUCTION SITES

Hong Kong labour authorities have initiated the use of an infrared thermal-imaging drone to detect heat sources and illegal smoking at construction sites. As of Tuesday, about 1,400 construction sites have been inspected, resulting in 39 fixed-penalty notices and 11 improvement notices issued to contractors, with two cases pending further action, according to Wan Chi-ping, assistant commissioner for labour. Plans are also underway to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the system to identify offenders more effectively. These measures are part of a broader effort to enforce the smoking ban and ensure compliance.
