Mount Etna’s recent eruption has produced a volcanic ash cloud that has disrupted flights to and from Sicily and Malta. Airlines have grounded aircraft, causing widespread delays across the region.
According to Travel Weekly, the ash cloud has forced airlines to suspend operations at several airports, including Palermo and Catania in Sicily, as well as Malta International Airport. ITIJ.com reports that flights heading to Malta are also grounded because the plume reaches the island, posing a safety risk to aviation.
Mount Etna is one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, and ash plumes have previously led to significant air‑traffic disruptions.
